As well as a burlesque theme, this costume is also ideal for a western
saloon girl, or for a french theme, including moulin rouge.
Trivia
The word burlesque is derived from the italian word "burla" which means
joke or mockery. The original version of burlesque shows were just that -
dramatic or musical performances which were aimed at causing laughter at
the expense of more serious works - like a theatrical parody.
This later developed into the cabaret style burlesque that we are more
familiar with - an extravaganza on stage combining the bawdy wit of
comedians and the allure of female striptease artists dressed in exotic
costumes.
Hollywood has tried to captured the spirit of burlesque shows with such
movies as Cabaret (1972) and All That Jazz (1979).
For the past few years there has been a retro revival in the style,
including Burlesque parties.
