The straw
boater hat (also called basher, sennit, cady or katie hat) was originally
a man's formal summer hat, popular for sailing or boating in the late 19th
and early 20th century. Ladies wore them too, often with a hat pin.
The straw boater also became popular for old-fashioned school wear, and
was used for the original St. Trinian's cartoon and movies.
It has a stiff
flat crown and brim, plus a band round the crown, and is normally made of
sennit straw.
In the 50s the
French movie star Maurice Chevalier was known for wearing a straw boater
hat, especially in Gigi, the 1958 movie. Dick Van Dyke also wore a straw
boater hat in the 60's movie "Mary Poppins".
