The Marvel Comics
superhero character Captain America was created by Joe Simon and Jack
Kirby and first appeared in comics in 1941. He is the alter ego of Steve
Rogers who, when ill, is given an enhancement serum in order to help
the United States war effort. His costume represents the American Stars
and Stripes flag. He also carries an indestructible shield which he throws
as a weapon. He later joined the Avengers team of superheroes. A movie
"Captain America: The First Avenger" is due for release in 2011 starring
Chris Evans in the lead role.
